If you fancy splashing the cash on a truly unique investment, then look no further than Cornwall – where a mere £50,000 can net you an entire beach – that’s 71 acres of prime surfer’s paradise in one of the UK’s top holiday destinations – so get your bucket and spade ready…

A recent survey by Travelodge has found that Cornwall is the top choice with Brits planning to take a holiday closer to home this year – and with an ever increasing number of staycations planned to combat the credit crunch, Cornwall is looking hot to trot.

Now, if you can’t stretch to a second home in Cornwall, how about another type of investment? A beautiful beach in the north east of St Ives Bay on the Cornish Riviera is for sale for a mere £50,000.

Gwithian beach, which boasts 71 acres of soft sand and five acres of dunes, is set to go under the hammer at Colliers CRE auction house in Portman Square, London, on 13th July.

Hugely popular with surfers, Gwithian beach is located eight miles from Penzance. Despite there being no planning permission to build on the beach or to excavate minerals from the sand, offers are expected to far exceed the low £50,000 guide price.

Richard Argles from Colliers CRE said it was impossible to say how much it might fetch. “Who can value a beach? You won’t be able to put a development on it, but there are 71 acres of sands and five acres of dunes.

“I've had a telephone bid already and the catalogue is not even out. We are expecting a lot of activity,” he added.

For the past 19 years the beach has been owned by Dennis Arbon, a trustee of the Hall for Cornwall, a performing arts venue in the country. Arbon has donated the beach to the hall and funds from the sale will go towards supporting the venue.
